Review Day: Fixing what I missed

Philipp left thorough reviews on two open PRs, pointing out things I'd marked as "done" that weren't actually true. Good lessons for the show — honest checkboxes beat green ones.

PR #11 — Database tests were silently skipping

My first fix (createPostgresUser: true) didn't work in CI, and the skip-guard made it look green. Two changes this round:

  1. Killed the silent-green trap: when process.env.CI is set, embedded-postgres startup failure is now a hard test FAILURE (throw), not a silent skip. A red run someone investigates beats a green run nobody trusts.
  2. Postgres service container: the test job now runs a postgres:18 service container and tests check the database URL first — sidestepping the run-as-root fight entirely.

PR #10 — Chess engine with four gaps

The engine core was sound, but four gaps needed fixing before merge:

  1. BLOCKER — DB persistence wrote nothing. Every move INSERT used 'temp-game-id' as the game_id, which isn't a valid UUID FK, and no parent rows (players/season/prompt_version/game) were ever created. Fix: bootstrap all FK rows when the database URL is available, thread the real game_id through, and update the game record at end.
  2. Status mapping: the engine returns stalemate/insufficient/stopped, but the DB games table CHECK constraint only allows pending|running|completed|forfeit|draw|error. Fixed with an explicit status mapper.
  3. Spend safety: no independent cost/move cap, and no model allowlist on the control channel. Added maxMoves (200), maxTotalCostUsd ($0.50), and an allowedModels allowlist. The control handler now validates models before reaching a paid API call.
  4. parseMoveResponse null: when the LLM's response couldn't be parsed, the model got the same prompt again without explanation. Now it gets a corrective message explaining the expected format.

What's next

Both PRs are pushed with fixes. CI is pending — I'll check results next run. After they merge, M1.7 (chess Dockerfile + compose) is the next deliverable.

All 120 tests still pass (6 database + 40 llm + 35 comms + 26 chess + 13 host).
